I had high hopes for this book considering how absolutely stellar Book 1 had been. In comparison, this one came up a little less compelling, even though it’s still good.The highest challenge this book faced was redeeming Malcolm, who had been pretty despicable in Book 1. While the book did succeed in redeeming him (which, in itself, is remarkable), I felt that it redeemed him to the point of making the character sympathetic, but not to the point of making him admirable or attractive.It’s hard to enjoy a romance book as much when you don’t feel the attraction is justified, but at least the couple did earn their happy ending. I’m glad we also got glimpses of Lachlan and Christina. Lachlan is as honorable and swoon worthy as ever, and we finally get to meet Christina’s child in the end!As sequels go, this one is strong, even though it’s not perfect. This review is a long time in coming (meaning I should have written it the second I finished the book! It was THAT good!)I feel the desire to be articulate and informative in my review about this book. My problem is that I loved it so much I think I do more ramblings and “OH MY WORD, YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK!!!” than anything that sounds like a book review sound be… but I will try 😉I read book 1 in this series, The Widow and the Highlander” (don’t worry I will get to this book eventually) and Martha Keys jumped into my top tier of favorite authors. It was quite grand in its scope of story, characters, situations (it’s not a simple “she gets her man in the end story”) that it was quiet unlike any regency romance book I had read. I don’t know if it even technically falls into that category since it’s a Scottish historical book. Either way, I was stunned by the book in the best possible way.I went into it a little skeptical because I like Dukes and Ladies and ballrooms and all that frou-frou. Scottish historical didn’t seem like it sat in that pocket and I wasn’t sure I would enjoy it. I read it because all the chatter about it from Bookstagrammers on Instagram.All I can say is that the buzz about book 1 is the real deal and is well deserved!!!Then… there was a book 2… THIS book.Everything I said about book 1 applies here: amazing story, Amazing characters - but this time we already know the characters and so I was 100% invested in page 1!!If it’s possible I loved this book even more!! It’s probably because I what I said about already being emotionally invested in loving - and hating -all of the characters From book 1.(Slight spoiler if you haven’t read book 1)The protagonists in this book is an easily hatable character from book 1 and I was shocked - I mean completely stunned - the author would undertake the monumental task of trying to redeem him! I thought author Esther Hatch had her job cut out for her in A Proper Scoundrel (another fantastic book) in redeeming Lord Bryant - but Martha attempted the IMPOSSIBLE by trying to redeem Malcolm, and yet she did it!!Malcolms story told from his perspective is quite different than what we see from outward appearances in Book 1. He is more complicated and conflicted with only difficult choices to make, and no peace in sight. I enjoyed watching him appear on the page differently than I would have ever suspected.Elizabeth on the other hand stayed true to her brash tendencies from Book 1. Her out spoken ways and “hit things head on” tendencies were on full display for all to see - but then her feelings/understandings/perspective changes as she starts to realize her view of things is not always accurate. Enemies are not always what they seem. And maybe your enemy - who is the enemy of your enemy - can become a friend, or even more.Once again our protagonist and heroin are oil and vinegar and yet they come together in such an unexpected way.This book is about so many things and has many complicated layers of family/loyalty/friends/love/trust/personal experience/hurt/fear/betrayal and they are woven together in a tapestry that, by the end, is satisfying.This should be on your must read list!!Depending on when you read this book there is a huge downside to it: The book ends setting up the premise of book 3 quite nicely (at least when I read the synopsis of it I am pretty sure I know who it will be about) and it doesn’t come out till January!!!!
