Richmond’s latest offering took me by surprise and an enjoyable one at that. I didn’t get hooked on The Wife’s House instantly, but a quarter of the way into this challenging psychological suspense, there was no stopping me. The author chose not to name the protagonist, adding mystery to her story. I got to learn all of the narrator’s emotions; her highs, lows, how she feels about past and present happenings, she leaves nothing out. Mind you, she’s in no hurry to reveal what I yearned to know, so the guessing game began. The descriptive writing is captivating. I felt as if I were there, living in this luxurious house, contemplating the views from the clifftop. The rugged surroundings, the beauty of the coastline, sunsets and the crashing waves embraced me. But it is by no means as pretty as the picture I am painting.Lies and secrets abound. Understandably, there’s not so much dialogue as the book is driven forward with inner thoughts. I virtually skim-read the last quarter of the book only to go back and reread what I found so shocking! The twist. I’d like to think that I can figure out most outcomes and even the consequences they bring, yet I never saw this one coming. The dramatic ending was undoubtedly jaw-dropping., and I have to say the performance of all the characters was brilliant. The cleverly thought-out plot kept me on my toes, Richmonde’s prose fluid and expressive. My first thought after finishing this thriller was that I'd love to see this on the big screen. Richmonde hit it on the spot. Bravo! I was excited diving into this book; the premise sounded great, and I love thrillers in unique settings. The setting ended up being the only thing I liked about this story. The descriptions were great and I love the area the house was in. Two stars for that. Zero stars for:*The abundant cliches.*The truly awful, cringe-inducing dialogue. It was very clear the author wasn’t exactly sure how American teens talk, and just winged it from old movies or something. And the trooper? Almost worse. His dialogue was embarrassingly laughable.*The outlandish scenarios ... completely unbelievable in every way.*How annoying every single character was. Ugh. I didn’t care about any of them.*The ridiculous last few chapters and ending. The not-surprising appearance of the mustache-twirling villain, the scorched earth way of dealing with nearly everyone, the “happy” ending. Everything wrapped up in a bow so nicely! I know my face looked like the, “Sure, Jan” meme during all that.I can see that this author has talent. I hope she stops writing silly, forced dialogue, learns to pace a story better, and not rely on silly gimmicks for twists. I would definitely be interested in future books.
